You start this one handcuffed to a wall, a low voice telling you you've been chosen for the lead role in his little cat-and-mouse game. That's the opening to Zodiac Killer, the room the Fox in a Box crowd dares each other into, the one with the queue of nervous laughter outside. It is, by reputation and by my own rattled nervous system, Hong Kong's scariest escape room.

The setup is pure dread. You're captives of a serial killer modelled on the infamous Zodiac, left to solve a series of logical puzzles scattered around his apartment, with exactly one hour to crack them all and get out before he returns to finish the job. There are jump scares — I won't say where — and the creepy atmosphere works on your concentration like sandpaper. Solving a cipher is hard; solving it while your lizard brain is screaming is the real challenge.

Here's the part people underestimate: behind the fear, the puzzles are properly good. Fox didn't just wallpaper a dark room with scares; the logic is unique and immersive, and beating it feels like genuine survival. It's rated 14 and up for good reason — not a kids' room — and if anyone in your group hates being startled, point them at Wild West Saloon and let the brave ones in here. A Game Master watches throughout and feeds hints on-screen, so you're scared, never stranded.

The Verdict

Zodiac Killer is the Fox in a Box thrill ride, and the room I'd send adrenaline junkies and horror fans to before any other in the city. It's tense, it's nasty in all the right ways, and the giddy, shaky "we actually did it" rush in the lobby afterwards is the whole reason people get hooked on this stuff. We escaped. We also flinched. Repeatedly.

Not sure your group can handle it? See why Fox in a Box tops our Hong Kong escape-room list and pick a gentler room. Feeling brave? Book Zodiac Killer at Fox in a Box — and maybe don't volunteer to go in first.
