What is CAVALLUNA – Gate to the Otherworld?
CAVALLUNA is billed as Europe's most popular live equestrian theatre production, having drawn more than nine million spectators across 25 years and 33 tour stops in its most recent run, according to an interview with Apassionata World GmbH managing director Johannes Mock-O'Hara published by the South China Morning Post. The current touring show, Gate to the Otherworld, is directed and composed by Emmy-nominated creator Klaus Hillebrecht and follows Meerin, a young sorceress whose gift for bringing drawings to life draws the attention of dark forces.
The production's Asian premiere lands at Kai Tak Arena, part of Kai Tak Sports Park, with the Hong Kong Jockey Club as Exclusive Presenting Partner — a centrepiece of the club's Year of the Horse campaign. It joins a busy year for the venue, which also hosted the Hong Kong Football Festival earlier in the season.

Is it a circus, a concert or a horse show?
None of the above, exactly. Mock-O'Hara describes CAVALLUNA as neither a conventional horse show nor a traditional circus: "Our focus is not on individual tricks or disciplines, but on an entire imaginative world in which horses, music, dance, lighting and storytelling merge." Highlights include the Hungarian Post, where a rider stands astride two galloping horses while guiding several more in formation, and liberty performances in which horses move without reins or tack, guided purely by body language.
The 54 horses were flown in from Europe with Cathay Cargo as Official Equine Transport Partner, using specialist live-animal handling and veterinary care throughout the journey — a detail worth knowing if you're bringing young children curious about how the animals travel.
Getting to Kai Tak Arena
Kai Tak Arena sits within Kai Tak Sports Park at 38–39 Shing Kai Road in Kowloon. The closest station is Kai Tak on the Tuen Ma line, using Exit D, roughly a 5–10 minute walk to the arena entrance; Sung Wong Toi station is a similar distance on the other side of the park. Given the scale of the venue and likely crowds around each performance, arriving 30–45 minutes before the show is sensible.
