Live jazz is the hardest thing to keep alive in a city with Hong Kong's rents. A band costs more than a Spotify playlist, a stage takes up paying floor space, and the audience that wants it is loyal but small. So when I say these are the best jazz bars and clubs in Hong Kong, what I really mean is: these are the ones that still bother to put a band on the stage, night after night, and do it well.
I've been honest about a hard truth, too. Two of the venues people still ask me about — Grappa's Cellar and Foxglove — are gone. Grappa's lost its lease back in 2019; Foxglove dimmed its lights for good at the end of 2025. This list only includes places I can confirm are open and playing in 2026.

1. Peel Fresco — The Dedicated Jazz Lounge
Peel Fresco Music Lounge (鬍鬚仔)
If Hong Kong has a beating heart for jazz, it's this little room on Peel Street. Peel Fresco is the closest thing the city has to a true dedicated jazz lounge — a cosy space with seating crammed in front of a tiny stage, where you sit close enough to watch a bassist's hands. It books respected local names alongside young talent and visiting international players, and the Sunday open jam is a genuine institution. Get there early; once it's full, it's full. This is the one I send people to first when they want the real thing rather than jazz-as-background-music.
2. DarkSide — Sultry Hotel Jazz at Rosewood
DarkSide
DarkSide is the grown-up option — Rosewood's flagship bar, all dark wood, rare aged spirits and vintage cigars, with a resident ensemble and guest musicians providing the sultry soundtrack most nights. It has ranked among Asia's 50 Best Bars, and you can taste the ambition in the drinks. This isn't a place you go to lose yourself in a solo; it's where the jazz frames an exceptional cocktail and a serious date. Dress smart, and book if you want a table near the music.
3. Ned Kelly's Last Stand — The Trad-Jazz Institution
Ned Kelly's Last Stand
A genuine Hong Kong institution. Open since 1972, Ned Kelly's is a no-frills Aussie pub in the heart of TST whose house band has been swinging through trad and Dixieland jazz classics for decades — often with comedy skits thrown in. This is the opposite of DarkSide: loud, unpretentious, beer-soaked, and enormous fun. If you want jazz with a pint and zero airs, this is your spot. It's also one of the few places where the music and the bill are both gloriously affordable.
4. The Wanch — Free Live Music in Wan Chai
The Wanch
The Wanch has been Hong Kong's grassroots live-music club since 1987, now in a larger home on Jaffe Road with a kitchen. It isn't a jazz-only venue — you'll get folk, rock and everything in between — but it runs a dedicated jazz series, and the no-cover policy makes it the easiest place in town to take a chance on a band you've never heard. Few cities still have a room this democratic about live music. Cherish it.
5. BB Jazz Lounge — Jazz and Champagne in LKF
BB Jazz Lounge
Occupying the old Orange Peel space in the heart of Lan Kwai Fong, BB Jazz Lounge is the polished, big-room jazz option — a 3,200-square-foot lounge that pairs high-quality blues and jazz acts with wagyu and champagne. It leans indulgent rather than intimate, which makes it a good choice for a group or a celebration. The location couldn't be more central; you can pair it with the rest of an LKF night easily.
6. The Stage — Art-Deco Cocktails and Live Sets
The Stage at Sophia Loren House
The newest entry here, and the most cinematic. The Stage sits inside the beautifully restored Woo Cheong Pawn Shop, all art-deco glamour, suede seating and a hidden key-access VIP bar. Live jazz and music run Wednesday to Saturday, and the cocktails come with theatrical flair to match the room. If you want a jazz night that doubles as a date in one of Wan Chai's prettiest heritage spaces, this is the move. Tips for a Jazz Night in Hong Kong
What to know before you go
- Check the schedule first. Most of these venues post their line-ups on Instagram. The act matters as much as the room — a great night is a great band, wherever they play.
- Arrive early for Peel Fresco. It's small and fills up fast, especially for the Sunday jam.
- Know the cover policy. Peel Fresco has a minimum charge; The Wanch and Ned Kelly's are usually free. Hotel venues recoup it through drink prices.
- Dress to the room. Smart at DarkSide and BB Jazz Lounge; come as you are at Ned Kelly's and The Wanch.
- Pair it with dinner. SoHo, TST and Wan Chai all have strong food scenes nearby — see our Hong Kong food-scene renaissance guide.
- Things change fast. Hong Kong's live-music venues come and go. Always confirm hours and status before a special trip.
