A quiet gallery at the Hong Kong Palace Museum is closing out the summer with brush and ink rather than blockbuster spectacle. Joyful Encounters: The Connoisseurship and Art of Wong Kwan Shut is Hong Kong's first major retrospective of the late calligrapher, painter and collector, and it enters its final weeks before closing on 30 September 2026.

In short: Joyful Encounters: The Connoisseurship and Art of Wong Kwan Shut runs in Gallery 6 at the Hong Kong Palace Museum (香港故宮文化博物館), 8 Museum Drive, West Kowloon Cultural District, from 13 June to 30 September 2026. Built around 68 works gifted by the late Mr Wong (1934–2026) and his wife, it traces his calligraphy, painting and decades as a connoisseur. Who was Wong Kwan Shut, and why does this exhibition matter?

Mr Wong Kwan Shut (王貴誠, 1934–2026) was a Hong Kong-based scholar-artist, calligrapher, painter and connoisseur whose work has been exhibited in museums around the world. Between 2025 and 2026, Mr Wong and his wife, Mrs Wong Pong Chi-ying, gifted 68 works to the Hong Kong Palace Museum (HKPM), spanning his own calligraphy and painting alongside classical pieces from his personal collection. Mr Wong passed away on 10 April 2026 at the age of 93, and the exhibition, as reported by ArtDaily, now doubles as a commemoration of his life's work.

Joyful Encounters is the HKPM's fourth exhibition built around a donated collection, and its first thematic show dedicated to painting and calligraphy. It sits within a museum better known for imported blockbusters — the Ancient Egypt and Contemporary Design shows among them — making this an intimate, locally rooted counterpoint on the same campus as HKPM's Contemporary Design exhibition.

What's in the three sections?

The show is arranged in three parts, each titled with a phrase drawn from Wang Xizhi's Preface to the Poems Composed at the Orchid Pavilion. "Poetising Subtle Feelings" covers Mr Wong's calligraphy across running, regular and cursive scripts, including a transcription inspired by Wang Xizhi and Wang Xianzhi's Jin-dynasty style, and cursive-script renderings of classical poems by Su Shi and Li Bai. "Gentle Breeze" turns to his paintings, including works made after Yuan-dynasty master Huang Gongwang and Qing-dynasty painter Gong Xian, alongside ink-bamboo studies that apply calligraphic brushwork to plant forms.

The final section, "Gatherings of Virtuous Intellectuals", traces Mr Wong's more than fifty years as a collector and his friendships across the Chinese art world, including colophons by scholars Qigong and Xu Bangda and a collaborative work made with painter Xie Zhiliu. The HKPM's conservation team restored selected pieces ahead of the opening, and the museum produced a companion video with interviews and archival material.

"Through this exhibition, I hope every visitor can see that brush and ink lines can dance gracefully, and poems, like music, can strike a deep chord with the audience." — Mrs Wong Pong Chi-ying, donor
