Mark your calendar: HKSAR Establishment Day (香港特別行政區成立紀念日) falls on Wednesday 1 July 2026, and this year the city is handing out an unusually generous spread of freebies. Free trams, free ferries, free museums and free swimming pools — a mid-week public holiday has rarely looked this good on a budget.
What is HKSAR Establishment Day?
1 July marks the day Hong Kong became a Special Administrative Region in 1997. In 2026 it's the 29th anniversary, and as a statutory public holiday it means a day off for most of the city. Because it lands on a Wednesday this year, it's a neat mid-week breather rather than a long weekend.

Free transport: trams, ferries & MTR
The easiest win is the tram. Hong Kong Tramways runs free across Hong Kong Island from 1 to 3 July, so you can clatter along the north shore from Kennedy Town to Shau Kei Wan without tapping your Octopus once. Hop off to explore Sheung Wan, Central or Causeway Bay along the way.
Over the water, several Star Ferry routes are free on 1 July, with vouchers distributed in advance — one of the most scenic harbour crossings anywhere, for nothing. On the rail network, the MTR is giving away 71,000 free domestic rides through a lucky draw on its mobile app between 9am and 6pm on 1 July. Separately, on the Airport Express, children aged 3 to 11 ride free to and from the airport from 1 July to 31 August.
Free museums & culture
Culture vultures do well on July 1. All museums and art spaces run by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) open their doors for free, while in the West Kowloon Cultural District there's free admission to general exhibitions at M+ and to thematic exhibitions at the Hong Kong Palace Museum.

Free pools, sport & attractions
If the weather's good, head outdoors. Entry fees are waived at almost all public swimming pools (Wan Chai pool is the exception), and a long list of fee-charging sports facilities — badminton and basketball courts, bowling greens, archery ranges and selected watersports — are free too. You'll need to register first via LCSD's Free Use Day website.
Nature lovers get free entry to Hong Kong Wetland Park in Yuen Long, while racing fans can enter the public enclosures of Sha Tin and Happy Valley racecourses for free to catch the Hong Kong Reunification Raceday. Big-ticket attractions including the Peak Tram, Ngong Ping 360, Ocean Park and Tai Kwun (大館) are also rolling out holiday discounts.
Dining deals and planning your day
More than 1,000 restaurants and shopping malls are laying on special dining, spending and parking promotions for the holiday, so it's a good day to book that lunch you've been putting off. There's even 29 percent off selected seafood and produce through the Local Fresh store from 1 to 7 July — a cheeky nod to the 29th anniversary.
One thing to confirm yourself: Hong Kong has marked past anniversaries with an evening fireworks display over Victoria Harbour, but you should check the official programme for whether one is scheduled in 2026.
