Hong Kong's two theme parks and one harbourfront carnival are all running Halloween programmes this October, and with young children the decision that matters is the date, not the venue. Ocean Park's haunted houses open on only 13 evenings of a two-month season, and children under five are barred from them outright. Hong Kong Disneyland keeps its Halloween in daylight and includes it with admission. The Wan Chai carnival sells a HK$50 child ticket and then tells you in its own terms that it is not suitable for under-sevens.

In short: Ocean Park Halloween Fest runs daily to 1 November, but the frightening half is confined to 13 evenings (9 to 11, 16 to 19, 23 to 25, 30 and 31 October and 1 November, from 5pm) and children under five cannot enter the haunted houses. Disney Halloween Time runs to 1 November in daylight and is included with park admission.

Which Halloween dates are safe for small children?

Ocean Park Halloween Fest runs from 5 September to 1 November 2026, but the season is split in two, and the split is the single most useful thing a parent can know. The daytime programme runs every day. The park's Day and Night Experience dates are 9 to 11, 16 to 19, 23 to 25, 30 and 31 October and 1 November, when opening hours stretch from 10am to 11pm.

The four walk-through haunted houses, Under the Castle, Voodoo Boo Terror Park, Troublesome Night 8 and Forbidden Asylum, open only on those 13 dates, and only from 5pm. On any other date in the season the frightening material is not running at all, which makes a plain weekday in early or mid October the quietest and cheapest way to give a four-year-old a Halloween day out.

Ocean Park's park-wide Halloween rules put it plainly: children aged below five are not permitted to enter the haunted house attractions. The same document bars full-face masks anywhere in the park, which catches a lot of shop-bought costumes. The Forbidden Asylum rules go further and ask visitors to leave soft toys, umbrellas, water bottles and Halloween props such as brooms, scythes and pitchforks outside before they go in.

What younger children actually get at Ocean Park

The daytime programme is substantial, and all of it comes with standard admission. The Bulu Boo Trick-or-Treat Party runs at Waterfront Plaza from 11am to 5pm every day of the season, with costumed hosts running candy games. The Trick or Roll Game, near the Eco-Herbal Trail, runs at 12.30pm, 2.30pm, 3.30pm and 4.30pm on weekdays, with an extra 11.30am session at weekends and on public holidays. Whiskers and Friends appear in Halloween costume at the Bamboo Zone at 11am, 1pm, 3pm and 4.45pm for photographs and hugs. There is also a lucky-draw hunt for up to 50 QR codes hidden across Amazing Asian Animals and Whiskers Harbour.

What admission does not cover is worth knowing before you queue at a ticket window. The four haunted experiences need a separate ticket, and so does the evening OPPA Scaremonies stage show, which only admits people holding a haunted-house ticket. A family sticking to the daytime side needs none of it, and does not need the Halloween Ocean FasTrack either, which starts at HK$380 and is valid only on the 13 night dates.

One quiet saving: Monday 19 October is a general holiday, the day following Chung Yeung Festival, yet Ocean Park prices it as a non-peak date. The Triple Terror Combo costs HK$238 that Monday against HK$280 on 23 to 25 and 30 to 31 October. If an older child or a parent wants the haunted houses while the little ones stay on the daytime side, the long-weekend Monday is the cheaper way to split the group.

Disneyland keeps Halloween in daylight

Disney Halloween Time at Hong Kong Disneyland runs to 1 November and is included with standard park admission rather than sold as a separate night ticket. Day tickets are tiered by date, so the price depends on the day you pick and is worth checking on the park's booking page before you commit.

On the day we checked the park's own daily calendar, opening hours were 10.30am to 8pm. The new Mickey and Friends Halloween adventure played at the castle at 11.45am, 1.45pm, 4pm and 5.45pm. The villains street party ran at 4.45pm and 6.30pm, the "Let's Get Wicked" stage show at 2.30pm, 4.45pm and 6.30pm, and the villains themselves come out in the afternoon, before dark, rather than after it. Times change daily, so check the calendar for your date.

Trick-or-treating has a catch that listings tend to skip. The park's Halloween page says you need to pick up the new Mickey pumpkin candy bag from a park shop first, then take it round the trick-or-treat stations in the different lands. The bag is a retail item and its price is not published, so budget for it.

The costume rules are stricter than most parents expect. Hong Kong Disneyland's park rules bar guests aged 14 and over from wearing costumes except during special programmes the park permits, and Halloween Time is one of those. Nobody aged 14 or over may wear a face mask at any time. A younger child's mask must leave the eyes completely clear and must not block side vision. Guests under 14 need an adult aged 16 or over with them to enter the park, and children under seven must be accompanied on rides.

Two evenings are worth avoiding. Toy Story Land, Mystic Manor and Grizzly Gulch all close at 6.30pm on 10 and 11 October for a private event, and those are three of the areas a family with young children spends the most time in. On the day we checked, Tarzan's Treehouse and its rafts, Orbitron, the Main Street railway station and Festival of the Lion King were also closed for maintenance.

Is the Wan Chai carnival worth it with children?

Spooky Halloween 2026 takes over the Wan Chai Harbourfront Event Space at 3 Hung Hing Road, beside the Wan Chai Ferry Pier and about three minutes from Exit A of Exhibition Centre station on the East Rail Line. It runs from 30 October to 1 November. The Carnival Zone opens 4pm to 10pm on the Friday and noon to 10pm on the Saturday and Sunday, with inflatable slides, booth games, food stalls and two nine-metre installations.

The Carnival Zone Only Pass costs HK$170 for an adult and HK$50 for anyone aged 17 or under, plus a handling fee of ten per cent. Game booths run on tokens at HK$100 for three, one token per play, so the games can overtake the ticket price quickly. The Mainstage Music Zone is restricted to 18 and over and checks government photo identification at the door, so it is not a family option at all.

"This event is not recommended for children aged 6 or below." Spooky Halloween 2026 ticket terms, on the organiser's official ticketing page

The organiser's reasoning is high-decibel sound, strobe lighting, dark themes and crowds. There is also no re-entry: step outside for a quieter half hour and the ticket is finished. If you do go with primary-school-age children, the best window is noon on Sunday 1 November, when the Carnival Zone opens and the music stage does not start until 6pm. Standard tickets went on general sale at 6pm on 2 October.

Costumes, and where not to take them

For costumes, the Hong Kong Tourism Board points shoppers at three street markets: Tai Yuen Street in Wan Chai, Fuk Wing Street in Sham Shui Po and Pottinger Street in Central. Sham Shui Po is the wholesale end and the one most likely to be picked over by the final weekend, so go early in the month if a specific costume matters. Remember the mask rules at both parks before you buy anything that covers a face.

The place not to take children is Lan Kwai Fong on Saturday 31 October. Our Lan Kwai Fong Halloween guide covers what that night is, and it is an adult crowd on closed roads with very little room to move. The city-wide programme around it is in our Hong Kong citywide Halloween guide, and for the rest of the year our guide to things to do with kids is the better starting point.

There is a case for skipping all of it. If your children are under six, the entire evening half of Hong Kong's Halloween is shut to them, and the daytime programmes are what you are actually paying a theme park ticket for. On the 13 Ocean Park night dates the park fills up and the queues for the family attractions lengthen with it. A quiet Tuesday or Wednesday in the middle of October buys the same trick-or-treat party, the same mascot photographs and a much shorter wait.

Dates, times, prices and age rules checked against oceanpark.com.hk and its published Halloween rules documents, hongkongdisneyland.com, the Hong Kong Tourism Board event listing and the official Spooky Halloween ticketing page, 2 October 2026. Theme-park show times change daily and the parks publish them on the morning of each day.

Frequently Asked Questions

How old do children have to be for Ocean Park's haunted houses?
Five. Ocean Park's park-wide Halloween rules state that children aged below five are not permitted to enter the haunted house attractions, and each attraction's own rules repeat it. The houses run only from 5pm on 13 dates in October and on 1 November, so on every other date of the season the question does not arise.
Is Halloween included in the Hong Kong theme park tickets?
At Hong Kong Disneyland, yes: Halloween Time comes with standard admission. At Ocean Park, admission covers the whole daytime Halloween programme but not the four haunted experiences or the OPPA Scaremonies show, which need a separate ticket from HK$238 on non-peak dates.
Can adults wear costumes at Hong Kong Disneyland?
The park rules bar guests aged 14 and over from wearing costumes except during special programmes the park permits, and Halloween Time is one of those. Face masks are a separate matter: nobody aged 14 or over may wear one at any time, and a younger child's mask must leave the eyes and side vision clear.

Pick the date first

Check whether your day is one of Ocean Park's 13 night dates before you book anything. Outside those evenings, Hong Kong's Halloween is a daytime festival, and a far easier one with small children.
