If you have ever wondered what happens when an artist treats the humble fluorescent tube as fine art, Dan Flavin: Grids is your answer. The show at David Zwirner in H Queen's, Central is the late American's first solo exhibition in Greater China — and it runs only until 8 August 2026.
What is Dan Flavin: Grids?
Dan Flavin: Grids is a focused museum-quality show of the artist's light sculptures, staged across two floors of David Zwirner in Central. Rather than a career survey, it zeroes in on one idea: the "grid" — works where Flavin arranged commercially made fluorescent tubes into ordered, glowing structures.
The effect is deceptively simple and quietly hypnotic. Coloured light bleeds across white walls and pools in corners, so the room itself becomes part of the artwork. It is the kind of show that reads very differently in person than on a screen, which is exactly the point.
Why does this show matter?
This is Dan Flavin's first solo exhibition in Greater China, and the first to focus specifically on his grid constructions. For a figure this central to post-war art, that is a genuine milestone for Hong Kong's gallery scene — and a reason to make the trip to H Queen's before it closes.
There is a neat bit of context, too: a version of the exhibition was shown at David Zwirner in New York earlier in 2026, so the Hong Kong run brings a major New York presentation directly to Asia. If you like art that plays with light and perception, pair it with our guide to James Turrell at Gagosian, another master of the medium showing in the city.
Who was Dan Flavin?
Dan Flavin (1933–1996) was an American artist and a defining figure of Minimalism. From the 1960s onward he made sculptures almost entirely from off-the-shelf fluorescent lights, in a fixed range of colours and standard lengths — turning industrial hardware into something luminous and contemplative.
His radical move was to insist that the light itself, and the space it transformed, was the artwork. Decades on, that idea still feels fresh, and it is why his work anchors major museum collections worldwide.
