Tango was once dance-hall music. Astor Piazzolla turned it into something you sit down and listen to — and the ensemble carrying his name is bringing that revolution to Hong Kong for one night this autumn.

In short: Quinteto Astor Piazzolla, the touring ensemble dedicated to the music of tango legend Astor Piazzolla, plays the Concert Hall, Hong Kong City Hall on Wednesday 30 September 2026 at 8pm. The Argentine group has won two Latin Grammy Awards (2019 and 2023) and has spent more than 25 years touring the world's major halls. The venue is a short walk from Central MTR Station's Exit K.

Who is Quinteto Astor Piazzolla?

After bandoneon virtuoso and composer Astor Piazzolla died in 1992, his widow Laura Escalada Piazzolla established the Astor Piazzolla Foundation to preserve his legacy. Out of that foundation came Quinteto Astor Piazzolla, a new ensemble of five virtuoso soloists formed specifically to keep his vast body of work alive on stage.

More than 25 years later, the quintet is still touring — picking up two Latin Grammy Awards (2019 and 2023) along the way and playing storied rooms including Carnegie Hall in New York, the Philharmonie de Paris, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the Wiener Konzerthaus and the Philharmonie de Berlin. The Hong Kong date sits within the group's 2026/27 touring season, which its members have described as launching a new chapter of the group's work under the banner "Le Grand Tango".

Astor Piazzolla turned tango from dance-hall music into concert-hall music — his official quintet has spent 25 years keeping that revolution alive from Carnegie Hall to Hong Kong.

What to expect from the show

Astor Piazzolla was born on 11 March 1921 in Mar del Plata, Argentina, and moved to New York with his family at the age of four. He learned bandoneon — the melancholy button accordion at the heart of tango — largely by ear, later fusing it with jazz harmony and classical composition technique to create what became known as nuevo tango.

The quintet format — bandoneon, violin, piano, double bass and guitar — is the same lineup Piazzolla himself used to record some of his best-known pieces. Expect a programme built from his catalogue of tangos, rather than a themed or narrated show: this is a straight concert performance for an ensemble whose entire reason for existing is playing his music.
