What is "Nocturnal"?
"Nocturnal" is a group exhibition at David Zwirner's Hong Kong gallery, organised and conceived by the Los Angeles gallerist Matthew Brown rather than by Zwirner's in-house curatorial team — a guest-curator arrangement that's becoming more common at the bigger mega-galleries when they want a specific point of view on a theme. The loose brief is night itself: darkness, artificial light, the hours when a city like Hong Kong behaves differently to how it does at noon.
It lands on the gallery's fifth-floor and sixth-floor spaces at H Queen's, the vertical gallery tower that's done more than almost any single building to concentrate Hong Kong's commercial art scene into a few square blocks of Central. Is it worth a look?
I'll be honest: theme-driven group shows can go either way — sometimes the concept is doing all the work and the art doesn't need it. But a fourteen-artist spread with this much range in practice, guest-curated by an outside eye rather than assembled in-house, tends to have more friction and surprise than the average gallery group show. Worth a lunchtime detour if you're already in Central, and an easy pairing with a wander through the rest of H Queen's.
