After a quiet, Central-heavy stretch, the openings map has spread right back out across the harbour. This week's verified intake runs from straw-smoked Korean barbecue on Des Voeux Road to cart-service dim sum in Quarry Bay, takes in a Sheung Wan café-bistro, a Wan Chai noodle room and two very different Tsim Sha Tsui arrivals — a New York-style deli and a ninth-floor Nepalese bar — and finishes with a date for the diary: Osaka yakitori chain Torikizoku opens in Mong Kok on Tuesday. Here is the hit-list, with the address, the price and what to order at each.

This week's openings: Taekwang Steel (straw-smoked Korean barbecue) in Central; Cleo's (café-bistro) in Sheung Wan; Chin Teng (noodle soups) in Wan Chai; Canto Jade (cart-service dim sum) at Cityplaza, Quarry Bay; Schragels Delicatessen (bagels & deli) in Tsim Sha Tsui; Niwas (Nepalese bar-restaurant) on Knutsford Terrace; and Torikizoku (yakitori) opening in Mong Kok on 4 August. Tap any name below for the details.

1. Taekwang Steel — Central

Korean barbecue, minus the marinade. Taekwang Steel has landed on Des Voeux Road Central with a point of difference you can smell from the door: rather than marinating its meat, the kitchen specialises in on-the-spot straw-smoking, and the staff handle all the grilling at the table while you sit back. The smoked pork jowl (HK$198) and smoked beef short rib (HK$548) are the headline cuts, and the supporting cast plays the classics straight — an aged kimchi and pork stew (HK$98) and a volcano steamed egg (HK$98) to round out all that smoke.

The room is spacious and trendy by the standards of this stretch of Central, and the do-it-for-you grilling makes it an easier group booking than most K-BBQ. If Korean drinking culture is more your speed, LANDMARK PRINCE'S is getting YuSang, an anju-and-sool house, from mid-August.

Straw-smoke over marinade, and staff who grill it all for you — a genuinely different K-BBQ pitch for Central. Bookings run through Google Maps or WhatsApp (4711 7858).

2. Cleo's — Sheung Wan

A café that behaves like a bistro. Cleo's, on quiet Circular Pathway in Sheung Wan, is a partnership between PASSIONE — maker of some of the city's best focaccia sandwiches — and the Sai Ying Pun café Rootdown, and it shows in a menu that goes well past coffee and brunch plates. The sandwich end holds an oxtail grilled cheese (HK$98) and a tuna melt (HK$88); the bistro end runs from leek and potato soup (HK$68) to salt-cured seasonal fish (HK$238); and the snack plate (HK$128) — tinned fish, chorizo, garlic labneh, soft-boiled egg — is the sleeper hit of the menu.

With cosy table service and a French toast (HK$118) worth crossing districts for, it slots neatly into the Tai Ping Shan café crawl — a few minutes' walk from the antique shops of Upper Lascar Row.

PASSIONE × Rootdown, which is a serious pedigree for a neighbourhood café. Go at an off-peak hour — the room is small and the table service unhurried by design.

3. Chin Teng — Wan Chai

Tai Hang's favourite noodle broth crosses the district line. Chin Teng, on Wood Road in Wan Chai, is the offshoot of the much-loved Tai Hang noodle shop Chin Jor Fan Tong, and it keeps the formula that made the original a queue magnet: Chinese noodle soups, done carefully, in a clean and comfortable room. The customisable braised beef noodle soup (HK$98) has been the hit from day one — a rich broth under a generous pile of toppings — and the short list of sides is worth a detour of its own, led by the spiced crispy bean curd with sweet and sour Thai sauce (HK$48).

"Seven rooms in seven postcodes — smoked short rib in Central, cart dim sum above Tai Koo station and New York bagels finally landing in Kowloon."

4. Canto Jade — Quarry Bay

The dim sum trolley rolls east. Canto Jade has opened on the fifth floor of Cityplaza with an elegant, Song Dynasty-inspired dining room and a proper commitment to cart-service dim sum — a format most of the city's newer Cantonese rooms have quietly retired. The Eight Delights Dim Sum Birdcage (HK$238 for two) is the table-theatre order; among six signature mains, the crispy chicken with scallion oil and mushroom sauce (HK$208) and the flambéed char siu (HK$168) stand out. On the way out, the "Canto Sweet" takeaway corner does traditional Cantonese desserts, coffee and tea.

5. Schragels Delicatessen — Tsim Sha Tsui

The bagel finally crosses the harbour. Schragels, the specialist behind some of Hong Kong's best hand-rolled bagels, has opened its first Kowloon shop — and made it the largest in the family, a two-storey space on Austin Avenue with an entire floor given over to workshops and events. The core order is unchanged: a bagel and schmear at HK$60, loaded sandwiches from HK$95, all baked fresh daily. What is new is the enlarged all-day menu of Jewish and New York deli classics — matzo ball soup (HK$95), a patty melt (HK$165) and that bodega staple, the black and white cookie (HK$50).

6. Niwas — Tsim Sha Tsui

Kathmandu, nine floors above Knutsford Terrace. Niwas bills itself as possibly the city's first Nepalese speakeasy — a chilled, modern bar-restaurant hidden up on the ninth floor of Koon Fook Centre, pouring easy-drinking cocktails built on Nepalese ingredients. The kitchen is the real draw: the momos (HK$78) are among the juiciest in town, and the menu digs deeper than most local Nepalese rooms bother to — dried buffalo sukuti (HK$98), stir-fried chowmin (HK$78) and sargemba blood sausage (HK$108) for the adventurous.

7. Torikizoku — Mong Kok (opens 4 August)

One for next Tuesday's diary. Torikizoku, the Osaka yakitori chain with four decades of history behind it, opens its sixth Hong Kong branch on Tuesday 4 August 2026 at Grand Plaza in Mong Kok. The formula is the one its fans already know — juicy kizokuyaki chicken skewers finished with the slow-simmered house sauce or pure rock salt, backed by a drinks list of more than 40 choices — but the new shop debuts a few rare cuts for Hong Kong, including chicken oyster and chicken breast soft bone. Hours run midday to midnight (1am on Fridays and Saturdays), which suits Mong Kok's rhythm nicely.
