Bright yellow hoarding has gone up on Central's Cochrane Street, and it belongs to MEGA MGC COFFEE, the budget Korean coffee giant that's about to make its Hong Kong debut. Known across South Korea for supersized cups at rock-bottom prices, the nearly 4,500-strong chain is opening its first Hong Kong shop this October — only its second location outside Korea after Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. The shop takes over the site of Indonesian Restaurant 1968, a Cochrane Street fixture that closed this July after 58 years of trading. Cochrane Street runs along the Central–Mid-Levels Escalator between Queen's Road Central and Gage Street/Lyndhurst Terrace, putting the new café within easy reach of the PMQ and Graham Street market area.
What's on the menu?
MEGA MGC's whole identity is built on volume: its signature americano is poured into a 24oz cup — roughly triple a standard flat white — at a price that in Korea comfortably undercuts even China's Luckin Coffee. Beyond the mega-sized basics, the chain is known for a handful of novelty drinks: the Cube Latte, built on frozen espresso ice cubes that slowly dilute as they melt, and Pong Crush, a blended frappé topped with Jolly Pong, South Korea's beloved puffed-wheat breakfast cereal. Whether the full Korean menu, or a Hong Kong-adapted version, will land on Cochrane Street has not been confirmed.
