Why is How Dept coming back now?

It was the sort of place that only worked because Kwun Tong's old industrial blocks were quietly full of them: creative studios and small retail concepts hiding behind unmarked factory doors, findable mostly by word of mouth.
According to the South China Morning Post's round-up of new Hong Kong cafés for September 2026, How Dept has now returned on the same street it occupied a decade ago — this time at Shop G01, G/F, The Angle, a new ground-floor unit at 98 How Ming Street, almost directly across from where it started. The difference this time is visibility: a ground-floor spot with proper street views, instead of a lift ride into an industrial block.
What's on the new menu?
The café side has had a proper refresh. Per the SCMP round-up, snacks now include Sichuan spicy beef nachos, while mains stretch to cheese egg rolls with dried sakura shrimp and salmon roe — a menu that reads more ambitious than the coffee-and-cake register a lot of homeware-store cafés settle into. There's also an extensive coffee selection, in keeping with the original's reputation as much a design showroom as a place to eat.
Exact prices weren't published in the source round-up at the time of writing, and How Dept's own channels hadn't posted a full menu with figures either — worth checking their Instagram or calling ahead before you make a special trip for a specific dish.
Inside The Angle, the mall around it
How Dept's new home is inside The Angle, a roughly 500,000 sq ft shopping centre at 98 How Ming Street developed by Sun Hung Kai Properties as part of the wider The Millennity project in Kwun Tong. Ten retail floors sit above four basement carpark levels, organised loosely into themed zones the mall calls "Anime ANGLE," "Food ANGLE," "Pet ANGLE" and "Your ANGLE."
The mall opened in phases from May 2026 under the name Scramble Hill — a nod to Tokyo's Shibuya Scramble Crossing that the developer hoped would import some of that district's energy to East Kowloon. It was rebranded The Angle in July 2026, a change that generated a fair bit of local chatter online about the reasoning behind it. Whatever you call it, other tenants filling in around How Dept include Japanese beef-bowl chain Matsuya and a Yata Supermarket, with more of the building still leasing up.
