Norway's understated jazz export lands on Hong Kong Island this autumn. The Espen Eriksen Trio — one of Nordic jazz's most quietly acclaimed piano trios — plays a single Hong Kong date on Wednesday 7 October 2026 at the Sai Wan Ho Civic Centre Theatre, en route to a short China tour taking in Hangzhou, Shanghai and Beijing.

Who is the Espen Eriksen Trio?
The Espen Eriksen Trio is a Norwegian jazz piano trio formed in 2007 by pianist Espen Eriksen, alongside bassist Lars Tormod Jenset and drummer Andreas Bye. The group has released five studio albums on Oslo label Rune Grammofon since their 2010 debut You Had Me at Goodbye, and has recorded and toured extensively with British saxophonist Andy Sheppard, including the acclaimed albums Never Ending January and In the Mountains.
Critics tend to reach for the same words — spare, lyrical, wintry — to describe the trio's sound, which draws as much on Norwegian folk melody and liturgical music as on the American jazz tradition. It is a quieter, more contemplative strain of Nordic jazz than the free-improv end of the Scandinavian scene, closer in spirit to labels like ECM than to anything club-oriented.

Espen Eriksen Trio — Live in Hong Kong
The Hong Kong date sits at the start of a short East Asia run — the trio continues on to Hangzhou's JZ Club, Shanghai's JZ Club and Blue Note Beijing later the same week. We will update this guide once URBTIX confirms exact ticket pricing and showtime.
Why is this gig worth catching?
Touring jazz acts of this calibre rarely play Hong Kong outside the big festival slots, and a seated theatre show at Sai Wan Ho — rather than a bar gig — suits the trio's hushed, detail-oriented sound far better than a noisy Wan Chai basement would. Sai Wan Ho Civic Centre's Theatre is a proper mid-sized concert hall with good sightlines, making it one of the more comfortable rooms on the Island for acoustic jazz.
