Tin Hau, the goddess of the sea, has long protected Hong Kong's fishing communities, and her birthday is marked with colour and noise at scores of temples across the territory — none livelier than the celebrations around Yuen Long and the coastal villages.
Event Essentials
What happens
Worshippers bring offerings and elaborate 'fa pau' floral tributes, while lion and dragon dance troupes, drumming and parades fill the temple forecourts. Fishing boats are decorated in the goddess's honour at coastal sites.
Where to go
Yuen Long hosts one of the largest parades; the temple at Joss House Bay (Tai Miu) draws boatloads of pilgrims by sea. Smaller neighbourhood temples celebrate too, so there's likely one near wherever you're staying.
