Tuen Ng, the Dragon Boat Festival, is one of Hong Kong's great public spectacles — drummers pounding time, paddlers digging in, and long dragon-headed boats slicing across the water while crowds eat sticky rice dumplings on the shore. It lands on Wednesday 9 June 2027, a public holiday.

What it is

The festival commemorates the ancient poet Qu Yuan, but in Hong Kong it is above all a racing day. Crews of up to 20 paddlers and a drummer power narrow dragon boats over short, frantic sprints. Eating glutinous rice dumplings (zongzi) is the edible half of the tradition.

Where to watch

Stanley hosts the most famous community races in a carnival atmosphere right on the beach. The Sun Life Hong Kong International Dragon Boat Races traditionally bring elite overseas crews to the Tsim Sha Tsui waterfront for a multi-day festival around the public holiday. Both are free — arrive early for shade and a clear view.
